Mangaluru, Feb 29: Justice Kadlur Satyanarayanacharya of principal district and sessions court of the city sentenced a man, who killed his wife with sword suspecting her character, for life and fined Rs 10,000 on Friday, February 28.
Sharanappa Balappa (48), a native of Kellur of Bagalkot, residing at Borugudde of Derebail Konchady in the city, is the person who killed his wife Manjula (38) on April 20, 2019.
Sharanappa Balappa, his wife Manjula and family were living at Borugudde. His wife has got her a house in her name also. They have four daughters. The eldest daughter is married. During the incident all the three daughters at home had gone to their grandmother's house at Udupi. A police complaint was also filed about the verbal arguments that were taking place frequently between Sharanappa and Manjula.

Sharnappa had murdered his wife with a sword in the bedroom. Neighbours had informed the police as they heard loud screams of the deceased woman. Kavoor SI Harish had registered a case and the then police inspector of Kavoor police station, K R Nayak had submitted chargesheet to the court. Recently, current inspector Raghava Padil had submitted additional chargesheet to the court in this case.
In total 18 witnesses were cross examined during the court proceedings. As the mother is killed and father is in prison, three daughters have become orphans. The judge has ordered the legal service authority to provide them suitable compensation. Presently, the daughters are residing in their grandmother's house at Udupi.
Earlier, public prosecutor Shekhar Shetty had argued for the prosecution and during the announcement of the verdict Harishchandra Udyavara had taken over the case.
