Panaji, Oct 28: Indian origin man with British citizenship, Ajay Kaushal, had no red corner notice issued against him by Interpol which facilitated his entry into India through Mumbai airport, a senior police official said.
Goa police arrested Kaushal, 50, listed as the most wanted in UK by Lancashire police, was arrested in the south district of Goa last mid-night.
“There was no red corner notice issued against Kaushal or else he would have been apprehended at the Mumbai airport immigration itself. He entered India through Mumbai and later flew down to Goa,”
Superintendent of Police (PRO) Atmaram Deshpande told reporters this evening.
He said that the Goa police had no business of being suspicious about him because he had given his correct name and details to the hotel and was carrying valid passport and Visa.
“Kaushal along with his British friend William Scott entered India from Bangkok,” Deshpande said.
The 50-year-old man from Manchester was on the run after his involvement, along with six others, in kidnapping a businessman for the ransom.
He was awarded 15 year jail term in his absence by Preston Crown Court. Kaushal entered Goa on October 24 along with his friend William Scott, who died within few hours of arrival in India.
“Kaushal behaved much normal with police and we had no suspicion that he was wanted by UK police. He did not hide his identity,” Deshpande said.
Police got tipped off about Kaushal only after British media and a community website of Uk based Goans published about his presence in the country, the SP conceded.
British embassy was instantly informed about the arrest of Kaushal last night and Lancashire police were also intimated, who are likely to arrive here in next couple of days.
