Karkala: 'We were in holiday mood, singing songs' - Passengers on ill-fated mini bus

Karkala, Feb 16: The passengers on the mini bus that met with the ghastly accident on the evening of Saturday February 15 at Karkala had no idea that what was supposed to be a fun office trip would turn so tragic.

The mini bus belonging to DB Travels travelling from Mysuru dashed into a boulder, claiming nine lives and injuring 27 others.

The Injured tourists of the bus have said that they were enjoying their tour singing songs and playing 'Antakshari'. They are of the opinion that the driver might have been distracted by the noise they were making.

This was one of the most horrible accidents to have taken place in coastal Karnataka in recent years. The group of youths, who were in the ill-fated bus, were employees of Vital Record Company of Nanjangud. They work as data entry operators.

Deepika and Divyashree, two of the injured, said, "The accident has shocked us. We were in holiday mood. We were having fun in the bus and playing Antakshari. As we made too much noise, the driver's focus must have lapsed, thus causing the accident."

The group of youths had left Mysuru on February 14 and had been to Shringeri and Kalasa and were on their way to Malpe beach in Udupi. But their tour and the lives of nine of them were cut short due to the shocking accident.

According to some reporters, at around 5.30 pm on Saturday, the axle of the bus got cut when the driver was veering the bus to the right to give way for an oncoming vehicle. This resulted in the bus crashing directly onto the roadside boulder.

The injured are recuperating in City hospital and government hospital of Karkala and KMC hospital in Manipal.

sringeri to SK border in Karkala is a death trap. i travel atleast 10 times in a year to Sringeri temple. sometimes we have to stop the car (mine is a small car) ateast 100 mts before a bottleneck to let the other bigger vehicle pass. ive seen many innovas and other MUVs and SUVs race down the ghats.
it is impossible to widen the roads in some spots. after the monsoon, the roads are repaired, and hence vehicles travel at a higher speed. in some spots, we have to be extra careful, even at 20 kmph, cause some psycho will be hurtling towards his death and we may be in his way. RIP

May be the driver too was enjoying his ways and trying to add fun to the excitement of the holiday makers. Too late to regret.

Drivers needs concentration and in the bust such fund and noise should be limited always. Especially, in the Ghat section and where there are U pins on the roads.

All the data entry staff that died were in the 21-22 years age group.

The driver and the 'cleaner' died too. But their ages are not available. I suspect the driver was in that same age group.

I had to tell a car (which served as a private taxi) driver: if you drive at more than 80 kms/hour, please let me out.

The other passengers started laughing at me. But the driver (under 25) knew I was dead serious. He then traveled at below 80 kms on the National Highway.

The driver later told me that I was the first person ever to ask me to drive below a particular speed.

He was then driving for five years. That too mostly on the National Highway.

Our stupid people get into the car/taxi/bus, and leave it to the wisdom of the driver.

Neither the passengers nor the driver are aware that saving life is more important than 5 minutes in travel time.

    Dear Mangalurean
I fully agree with you. We need to caution the driver if he exceeds the speed limit. Better to be safe than regret later.
