Udupi, Feb 15: The Youth Red Cross Cell, National Service Scheme, Rovers & Rangers and IQAC of St Mary’s College, Shirva and Lions Club Shirva – Manchakal jointly organized the 27th annual blood donation camp on February 8 in collaboration with KMC Hospital Blood Bank, Manipal.
Ln V G Shetty, pmjf, the Dist Governor, Dist 317-C inaugurated the blood donation camp. In his inaugural address he said, “Students should grab every opportunity available in life. Along with studies, service orientation should go alongside in a student's life. There is great demand for life-saving blood. Many organizations are concerned about creating awareness on blood donation and organizing blood donation camps. Blood donation Service is an enormous service to society.”
Dr Deepika Chenna, Assistant Prof, department of Transition Medicine spoke about the components of blood namely, each whole blood donation contains three components (red cells, platelets and plasma) which can help three different patients. “You never know when you or someone you may know will need blood. Due to amazing donors like you, the lives of many are saved.”
Principal Prof Rajan V N presided over the programme. In his presidential remarks he said, “The college has been conducting the blood donation camp for the last 26 years, as well as anti-drug awareness, road safety awareness programme.”
Dr Ashwin, Assistant Prof, department of Transition Medicine, Ln Lancy Corda, secretary, Ln Julian Rodrigues, zone chairman, Lions Club members, Assistant Prof Premanath, Tanuja N Kotian, Assistant Prof Prakash, Assistant Prof Sushma were present.
114 units of blood were collected at the camp. Ln Canute Mathias, president of Lions Club Shirva – Manchakal welcomed the gathering. Assistant Prof Shameen Fernandes, director of Youth Red Cross proposed the vote of thanks. Assistant Prof Prajna Krishnan compered the programme.
