Mangaluru, Feb 12: "The acid attack on a woman and her child at Kadaba is outright an inhuman act. Dereliction of duty on the part of the police in handling the case has been observed," said member of National Commission for Woman (NCW) Shyamala Kunder.

Shyamala was speaking to the press after meeting the victim of the acid attack who is being treated at Fr Muller Hospital in the city on Tuesday February 11. The woman had been attacked with acid by the brother of her husband. She said that the commission had registered the case on the basis of the letter received by it, and that report from the inspector general of police and Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police have been obtained. "I spoke to the victim of the attack and collected all the details. She is recovering," she revealed.

She said that as per the information provided by the lady, dereliction of duty on the part of the police has become evident. "The victim has three daughters. The incident has mentally drained her. I have assured that NCW is with her at this time of crisis. I have also directed to provide her police protection if found necessary," she added.

Shyamala revealed that she has asked the department of women and child welfare to extend free education and other facilities to the three daughters of the victim. She also said that in addition to extending necessary legal assistance, the lady will also be provided with counselling facility by the Sakhi centre. She said she will ask the police department to disburse compensation to the lady from Nirbhaya Fund.
