Mangaluru, Feb 8: Generations of MBBS doctors go through the rigorous four and a half year training programme which consists of academic learning and clinical assessment of patients through the vigilant eyes of their mentors. When in internship, the medical intern has to think on his own and has to take decisions in a jiffy to save lives. To overcome these issues and make the new generations of doctors more competent and confident inpatient care approaches, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru in association with Jeeva Raksha Trust has made it compulsory for interns to undergo training through a well-developed module for interns.
The four-day ECLS Jeeva Raksha course - (Saving Lives, Assuring Care) – A comprehensive emergency care and life support training course for medical interns in collaboration with RGUHS was organized from February 2 to 5 by the Father Müller Medical College at its internationally certificated and nationally recognized Father Muller Skill and Simulation Centre.
Assessment was conducted by the RGUHS and the requirement to train the MBBS interns with self-decision making and emergency care was highlighted. The rural posting of interns where basic infrastructure only exists and being the only source of help to the people, the intern should be well qualified with the practical essential needs of the common man. Hence this course was developed to make the medical intern more competent in emergencies, equipping them with the greatest finesse to
handle a person with care.
The primary focus on recognizing and managing critical illnesses that are common in the Indian PHC setting like respiratory, cardiac, obstetric, pediatric, trauma and poisoning cases were highlighted through practical and theory sessions from 8.30 am to 6 pm during those days. The students gained thorough hands-on experience with the skill trainers and simulators at FMSSC.
This unique, holistic and wholesome four-day course gave the first batch of interns the ability to manage emergency cases in a low resource setting.
The four-day course ended with a valedictory programme attended by the director of FMCI, Fr Richard A Coehlo, dean, Dr J P Alva, Jeeva Raksha observer Dr Girish, course director - Dr Sumanth and co-course director Dr Lulu Sherif and instructors from medical colleges around DK district. The valedictory programme ended on a high note with the vote of thanks by Dr Lulu Sherif and student feedback about the four-day resource-intensive course by Dr Shashank Kini. Fr Ajith B Menezes, administrator FMMC was instrumental in the success of the event with a keen eye over all the day’s proceedings.
The Father Muller Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art, muti-professional training facility equipped with the most advanced medical simulators and skill trainers. Established in November 2015 as the first functioning advanced simulation center in Mangaluru, FMSSC is committed to inculcate evidence-based simulation competence into the health care curriculum. FMSSC is the first to be accredited by the American Heart Association as an authorized training center for CPR and ECC courses.
The center also hosts CPR training and basic life support for schools, religious and the general public. Booking and appointments can be made for the same in advance at the FMMC Administrators Office.
Due to the large number of interns, four to five more modules will be held to cover the whole batch of new doctors who will be skilled to treat with confidence.
