Mangalore: ICYM Mukka Parish Celebrates Deepavali

Mangalore, Oct 20: The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of Mukka Parish celebrated Deepavali on Sunday October 18 evening.

Deepavali is the festival of lights. It has both cultural and religious significance. The people of the parish joined their Hindu brethren in Deepavali celebrations to symbolize brotherhood and harmony.







Fr Lawrence Martis, parish priest of Holy Spirit Church, Mukka, speaking after inaugurating the celebrations, wished that the light that drives away the darkness, will be with the people and guide them along their lives. “Let mutual trust, faith and love provide a lasting bond in our lives,” he added.

The faithful in the parish celebrated Deepavali and offered prayers for the welfare of the country and the world. Special prayer was also offered for the flood-affected people of North Karnataka.

ICYM Mukka unit president, Roshan Monteiro, welcomed. Angeline Aranha delivered the Deepavali message.

The children thereafter, passed the flame by lighting the candle held by the ones standing by their sides. Then everyone congregated in the church premises, burst fire crackers and distributed sweets, thereby celebrating Deepavali in a meaningful way.

    Dear Mr. Pernal because Christians at Mukka Parish celebrated Deepavali does not mean they have to celebrate Christmas. It is exclusive their choice. Good thing is that the Mukka Parish has celeberated Deepavali and let it continue. What one will expect with every community is to respect others.

    I agree with Vittal Avcharya , Udupi . But instead of visiting Hindu Temple/houses why christians only congregating in church compound and bursting crackers ? Why Can't they think outside church compound ? If they donated money spent on crackers to flood victims it would have been more meaningful way of Deepawali celebration.

    H M Pernal/Mangalore, Deepavali is a festival associated with hindu mythology/epics and its quite natural and evident that hindus celebrate it as festival lights to mark the victory of Bali Chakravarthy over evil. I am sure that no muslim and christian would celebrate this deepavali with the same asta and bhakti like their hindu brethern. But there is no harm in celebrating it as symbolic to show solidarity. By doing it dont expect its reciprocal by others. All festivals have a history/cultural and religious background and must have immense faith in its celebration. Muslim celebrates Bakrid with immense faith but non muslims dont..Its matter of faith and religion. But as Indians with multi ethinic and multi cultural society, we must respect each and every festival, religious feelings and exchange greetings and pleasantries. Dont criticise others religions and practices associated with it. Muslims dont believe in idol worship, but it doesnt give them permission to destroy idols of other religions. Thats called unity in diversity. But beware of politicians and some religious heads who are keen to fish in the troubled waters...

    Fair Enough ! Now it is the time of Hindu Brethren to Celebrate Christmas and reciprocate. Now , How Congregating in the church premises, bursting the fire crackers and distributing the sweets becomes meaningful way of Deepawali Celebration ?
