Suicide as Sin gets a Decent Burial in Kerala Churches

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 20 (IANS): Life may or may not have been fair to those who commit suicide, but the churches in Kerala have decided they will be given a "decent" Christian burial.

With changing times, conventions and practices in churches have also undergone changes.

The Syro Malabar Catholic Church has decided that it will start giving a 'decent' burial to those who commit suicide, which is considered as a sin in Christianity.

Church spokesperson Father Paul Thelekkat said: "Formerly in our church all those committing suicide used to be buried in one corner of the cemetery. The body would not be placed inside the church and no priest would conduct any service at all."

But now the church has started giving them a simple burial. The body of the victim is brought to the church, a priest would be there, two ornamental umbrellas and a wooden cross would be used for the service, he added.

But the parish vicar and the church council still have the power to decide if the victim deserves the honour. If the council decides that the suicide was a 'scandalous' one, then the body is not allowed inside the church, Thelekkat added.

Though the change in the rituals was announced in 2003, it is only recently that it has been brought into practice, the priest added.

Christians in Kerala account for around 23 percent of the 3.2-crore (32 million)population, and of this Syro Malabar Catholics account for more than 50 percent followed by other denominations like the Syrian Orthodox and Mar Thoma churches.

Father T.J. Joshua, one of the seniormost priests in the Syrian Orthodox Church, said: "No one knows the mental state of the person who took his life. Maybe he would pray to god. We have now developed a special service for such victims. The priests now offer the incense also. Before the rules were revamped, the body would be taken to the vault and a priest would just go to the home, without wearing the customary black overcoat."

Elaborating on the changes made in the rules in his church, Vicar General of Mar Thoma church, Father A.C. Kurian, said: "Now there is a separate service for such people (who commit suicide).

"The first part of the service is held at home, then the body is brought to the church. The third part is held at the cemetery tomb," he said.

"However, a tomb in the name of the deceased is not given, but the body can either be buried in the family vault, or in the tomb of any relative," said Kurian.

The church's progressive initiatives have found support with the people.

"The family will be passing through great grief, and support at that time is a must. By giving (the victim) a proper burial it will be of great help to the family. Moreover, even at the last moment the person can repent, god may accept his repentance," said a devout Christian, requesting anonymity.

Everything happens in this world as per the will of God is what we are taught in the Church . Judas betrayed Jesus and in desperation committed sucide according to the prophesies. But he is condemned by the Church and all of us though he acted as per the will of God. Then why different people should be judged in diferent yardsticks and according to rigid rules suited to those in power?

I fully agree with Gladson. There was a time when suicide was considered as a deliberate act against God. The fact may be different. Psychologists state that those who commit suicide do it out of desperation, as they find no other way to resolve their problem. Such people need empathy and understanding.

Gladson - I am surprised as to how brainwashed you are with your opinion on God and Church. You almost sound like you are the voice of God. Please do not make any assumptions on god and church. Let us all have our opinions and not mutate into people with a stuck record. We do not know what Gods reasoning is for life and death. What I know is that even for burial in a church you now have options like - suicide with no scandal - OK - suicide with scandal - Not OK - normal death with scandal - with money close to god, else within the premise What is this a parking lot??

While Church might have been wrong in the way it enforced this rule earlier as doctrine, I would guess the actual motive behind such a move was very good. Only God has the right to give life and therefore only He has the right to take life. Today we know the reasons behind suicide and we also at times know that what the person may be undergoing at the time of suicide. But in those days the usual belief was that persons who usually committed some grave sins ended life. The psychological part of it or the truth is that suicides usually are the result of depression, is a much newer invention, I would say. Even today when we hear that someone has committed suicide, we start keeping their families away. Before criticizing the Church for the sake of criticizing or because of our anger towards clergies, let's value the reason behind such decisions. Life has more value than death and therefore suicide is still not the solution for problems. It is true that no one including the church and clergy should interpret God's mercy or His love. In the same way no one should either take God's love and mercy for granted also. Reverence to life means reverence to God. Church might have been wrong, but it was only due to the prevelent times and situations rather than someone's personal gains. This is welcome move but let no one take church for granted even. Let reverence for life continue than the desire to die. Salvation, if it is there, is God's gift to us and not out indispensible right.

When God can forgive all sins, who are we humans to decide the rules. Why do religious heads behave like drug peddlers and sell religion as Opium to the masses. All religion preach peace and harmony, then who are we to divide the masses based on actions??

why is suicide a sin. Doesn't this take us faster to God. If he is so powerful then why did he give us the option of death. In other words we have the power to destroy his creation. When a family member committed suicide the church treated us badly and now they are changing rules. This is utter nonsense.

Gods Natural Gifts such as Air Flows, Rain Showers and Sun beams evenly on all then who are we?, creatures of almighty to discriminate and judge what is good and what is not Good? We should treat and learn to treat alike at least not during their life time at least after death.

As I know burial is just a final ceremony of the dead body..!!!! weather it is buried, cremated of eaten by animals..will not/shall not have any effect on the resurrection..!!!!! for example the the Air france aeroplane fell into sea and most of the bodies were eaten by fish and what sort of decent burial could be given in such cases..!!???? It is high time the church realises that the person who is committing suicide is mentally unstable and he is not bothered about the burial process...!!!!?? and hence every human being shall be given a decent burial...irrespective of reason for death!!???

Finally, the Church is showing compassion to bury somebody who has commited suicide, which is the attitude of Jesus Christ. Among the Indian States, Kerala has the highest rate of suicide. The Church has to get involved with this problem, to prevent more suicides in our society. We live in a time in which there is no peace, but total stress and many people resort to suicide without finding any hope. The families, Church and the society will have to work together to change this critical situation we face today.
