New Delhi, Feb 5: According to a report published by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) the number of Indians migrating to Canada has more than doubled in the period of 2016 to 2019.
The American government policies on restrictions of immigration to Indians is said to be the main reason for Indian favouring Canada to settle down than US.
The data from immigration, refugees and citizenship of Canada, which is analyzed by NFAP, till the end of November, 2019 80,685 Indian had opted for permanent residency in Canada. This is a 105% jump from the corresponding figure for 2016, in which, 39,705 people migrated to Canada from India.
Throwing more light on this shift, Stuart Anderson, executive director of NFAP said, "As it has become difficult for Indians to work and migrate to the United Stated, more and more Indians are choosing Canada for their permanent residency as well as for higher studies."
Indian professionals have had a tough time after Donald Trump assumed the presidentship of the United States as he made the rules stricter and also made it more difficult to emigrate to US. Turmp's policies meant that more H-1B visas, the short-term work permit for hi-tech talent jumped from 6% in 2015 to 24% in the first three quarter of 2019.
The report, however, is not able to give the exact number of Indians that have shifted from US to Canada and those who have gone to Canada directly from India.
