If the medical college is established in the district, students who are unable to meet high fee structure of the private colleges can undergo education here instead of seeking other courses. Moreover, with the establishment of medical college, infrastructure at the district hospital will improve, and the hospital would be able to cater to the needs of patients in a better way as they always will have access to professional doctors.
At present, this district has one private medical college at Manipal. There is also a demand to sanction government nursing and para medical colleges to the district and people's representatives had raised this demand many a time.
MLA K Raghupati Bhat, expressed the confidence that the government will soon give its nod for setting up medical college at Kolalagiri. State medical education minister Dr Ashwath Narayan, also said that in tune with the government's desire to have government medical colleges in all the districts, such a college will soon come up in Udupi district.
