Mangaluru, Feb 2: University College, Mangaluru, or Government College, is all set to celebrate 150 years of its existence. The institution will celebrate this important milestone with an event on February 6 at 10.30 am at the recently inaugurated UCM Karnataka Bank open stage of the college.
Addressing a press meet here on Sunday, February 2, Mangalore University vice-chancellor Prof P S Yadapadithaya said, "Dharmastala Dharmadhikari Dr D veerendra Heggade will inaugurate the programme and release the souvenir. A special postal cover has been prepared to mark this occasion. It will be released by chief postmaster general (Karnataka circle) Charles Lobo on the occasion. Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, former chief minister M Veerappa Moily, MLAs U T Khader, Vedavyas Kamath, MLCs S L Bhoje Gowda, Ivan D’Souza and others will grace the occasion."
Construction of 8 classrooms in Dayananda Pai block, digitization of library, developing an art gallery and museum in Ravindra Kalabhavana, making the mid-day meal project more effective, construction of modular kitchen and dining hall, Yoga therapy training, establishing a Yoga Therapy Centre, establishing Mangalore University Prasaranga sales complex in the college campus are some of the projects that will be taken up in the near future, Prof Yadapadithaya said.

Though the institution had completed 150 years in 2018, due to many administrative reasons, the celebration was postponed. However, various activities to commemorate the milestone have begun. Among them, the restoration work of Ravindra Kala Bhavan and the construction of the Karnataka Bank sponsored open stage have been completed.
Attempts are in place to strengthen the existing courses in the University College. Meanwhile, Mangalore University has decided to take all necessary actions to develop this reputable institution as a model college.

An exhibition put up by the University College Mangaluru and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will be inaugurated on February 6 at 10.20 am.
Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade will inaugurate the formal programme and will release the souvenir prepared as a part of 150 years of celebrations. Mangalore University vice-chancellor Prof P S Yadapadithaya will preside.
Karnataka circle chief postmaster general Charles Lobo will release a special postal cover on this special occasion.
Muzrai, fisheries, ports, and inland transport minister and also Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister Kota Srinivasa Poojary, Mangaluru MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyasa Kamath, MLA U T Khader, MLC S L Bhojegowda, MLC Ivan D’Souza and corporator Vinay Raj will be the chief guests for the event.
Former chief minister M Veerappa Moily, century builders managing director Dr P Dayananda Pai, Archaeological Survey of India superintending archaeologist Dr Shivakant Bajpai will be the special invitees.
A get-together function of alumni will be held from 2.30 pm to 5 pm. The alumni and the students currently studying at University College and University Evening College will present cultural programmes from 5 pm to 7 pm.
