Another Murder in Goa, Fourth in Three Days

Panaji, Oct 14 (IANS) Another partially decomposed body of a middle-aged woman was found in Goa's Porvorim, a few kilometres from here, taking the total number of women found murdered in the state to four over the last three days.

The latest victim's body was discovered next to a primary school in Porvorim Tuesday evening. Even as the post mortem of the other three dead bodies would be carried out later Wednesday, police suspect that all the victims were murdered.

While only one out of the four deceased could be identified, in some cases the facial features are charred, making identification difficult.

Goa police have meanwhile made light of queries related to the safety of women in the state.

Superintendent of Police (CID) Atmaram Deshpande had replied to a woman journalist during a press conference: "Women in Goa are as safe as you are standing in my office - full of your male colleagues."

The four suspected murders and the similarity in attempts made to char the face of the victims comes on the heels of a shocking serial killing saga in Goa, when Mahanand Naik, a rickshaw driver, was arrested for strangling 16 women over the last 10 years.

Asked about the possibility of another serial killing in the current spate of murders, Deshpande said: "We are not ruling out anything at the moment. But it is too early to call these serial killings."

Of the four people killed, one has been identified as a 16-year-old girl residing on the outskirts of Panaji. The other two, in their early and mid-twenties, whose bodies were found in remote locations in Khorjuem, 25 km from here and in Verna in South Goa, have not been identified yet.

Crimes against women in Goa have hit the media spotlight in the last couple of years, with the murder of British teenager Scarlett Keeling and the mysterious death of Russian teenager Elena Sukhonova earlier this year.

Alleged serial killer Mahanand Naik's murder rampage, where he strangled 16 women with their own dupattas, were also elaborately reported in the media, as was Home Minister Ravi Naik's subsequent statement that "women should no longer wear dupattas on their churidars" because Mahanand had used them to strangle his victims.

Jamil Sir, Alcohol may be the root cause of all these tragedies in perhaps your Udupi town but definitley not in Goa where the book clearly says "The love of money is the root of all evil (1Timothy6-10). Goa is not a heaven for alcohol. It is a clean & a decent place where peace loving, life loving people, mostly christians enjoy their daily lives happily without harming others. Either you have forgotten or they have not told you that the actual place is your heaven (jannat) where rivers of milk, honey and wine (alcohol) flow along with some other goodies..., not Goa. Read your books.

Country judiciary system is very weak. Criminals get a bail, the very next day after commiting the murder. Next come, the politicians, who support criminals and the third is the inefficieny of the police force.

Its one of the crimes. why such a big big fuss just bcause its in Goa? Dont we see this type of crime every where ? Goa is still a lovely place to live in , safe , and people in Goa are really hospitable, caring, fun loving and helpful. Dont just accuse Goa of all the ills just because one crime is highlighted by the media. Bad things happen in every state. And Goans dont drink and create havoc like the way the outsiders who come to Goa to drink and create ruckus. So lets stop accusing Goans, and hope the Cops do a good job , which i am sure they will do.

Goa...if u want to experience heaven on earth..go to Goa. People are so kind and helpful, nature is so rich...you can touch and feel divinity in it. It is outsiders made it a hell. The Goan Government should come up with a plan of entry permit to the state...that some of our states have like that of Mizoram.

Alcohol is the best medicine for tension, provided one takes in a limited quantity.I feel sorry for those who did not taste it. It gives immense pleasure and makes serious mood into party mood. Cheap quality alchohol and unlimited drinking make everything worse. Anyway, subject here is Murder and not alchohol. An efficient police force can tackle all types of crime in any state.Unfortunately,Goan police force is not at all efficient.

Undoubtedly, Goa is a lovely place with its beautiful, clean beaches with golden sand. The people of Goa are very much hospitable & kind. But, the people from other places are hell bound to ruin the image of this beautiful place. I have witnessed it at Bayana beach a few years ago. Viva Goa.

THE CRIME RATE IN INDIA IS GOING UP LIKE THE COMMODITY PRICES. THE CRIME RATE IS DIRECTLY INDICATIVE OF THE COMMITMENT OF THE CENTRAL AND STATE GOVTS & THE RESPECTIVE POLICE. IF THE GOVT WANTS THE CRIME RATE CAN BE EASILY BROUGHT DOWN.

Goa have been spoiled by people who have migrated from other states. If you see the History, Goa was a peace leaving state, with good educated friendly people with good culture.Have anyone heard about violense in Goa before say 7-8 years? People have misused their freedom in Goa and to a great extent currupt politicians have given growth for it to secure Vote Banks. If Administration is strict these wouldn't have happened and there are lots of loopholes in it.Please do not blame Goan people, they are very humble, friendly and good natured peoples. Yes I agree that a few numbered young Generations do not envy their forefathers contribution towards Goa. And that is the reason they say History must never be forgotten and efforts should be made to educated the Students the Goan History. Outsiders please respect each and every state of India because they have their own rich cultures.

Jamil, just because you are told not to drink by your religion does not mean Alcohol is the root cause of all tragedies. If taken in moderation, it is a wonderful drink. For example if you use a kitchen knife to cut meat and vegetables, it is good but if you take it outside your home to threaten and kill, then it is dangereous. Goa is not alone in selling alcohol, many states in India sell alcohol but it is the people who overdrink and abuse it are the root cause of all tragedies.

Jamil, it is not alcohol,ok and you cannot say Goa is heaven for alcohol, Goa is peaceful place and Goans are loving and caring, and kind in heart, but mostly all outsiders (non-goans) coming to Goa to drink for they never get drinks outside Goa, and they dont have control to drink, have made Goa a rubbish place.  But we goans know our respect and know how to control our drinks if we have, so what you say that Goa is heaven for alcohol is rubbish.
