Udupi: FASTag not made mandatory - Vehicles pass tollgates without problem

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jan 16: Even though the central government had said that FASTag use is mandatory in all the tollgates in the country from January 15, this was not enforced on Wednesday in the tollgates located in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Vehicles continue to pass the tollgate without any hiccups. As per the government order, two gates were to be reserved for locals, two for emergency entry and two for cash transactions. All other lanes were to be used for FASTag. It is said that the toll plaza staff opted to continue the current practice as they did not receive any instructions from National Highways Authority of India.

In the meantime, some sources said that vehicle might be charged double the normal charges from today onward. At Hejamady tollgate, two cash payment lanes were functional on Wednesday. From Thursday, only one cash counter would function, the toll gate staff said. Some sources said that vehicles not having FASTag will have to pay double the charges from Thursday.
