Muscat: 79-year-old Sultan of Oman, who ruled country since 1970, dies

Muscat, Jan 11 (IANS): Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the Arab world's longest-serving ruler, has died aged 79, state media reported on Saturday.

"The Diwan of Royal Court announces mourning and disrupts the official work of the public and private sectors for three days and flags at half-mast in the next 40 days," Xinhua news agency quoted the state TV public channel as saying on Twitter.

The Sultan, who ruled Oman for almost half a century, was unmarried and had no heir or had designated successor, according to media.

Last month he returned home after undergoing medical checks and treatment in Belgium. There were reports he was suffering from cancer, the BBC said in a report.

At the age of 29, Sultan Qaboos in 1970 deposed his father Said bin Taimur in a bloodless coup with British support and using its oil wealth, he then set Oman on a path to development.

According to the sultanate's Basic Statute, the Royal Family Council, comprising about 50 male members, should choose a new Sultan within three days of the throne falling vacant.

If the family cannot agree, members of the defence council and the chairmen of the Supreme Court, the Consultative Council and the State Council will open a sealed envelope in which Sultan Qaboos secretly recorded his choice and enthrone that person.

The sultan is the paramount decision-maker in Oman and also holds the positions of prime minister, supreme commander of the armed forces, minister of defence, minister of finance and minister of foreign affairs.

May the sould of His Excellency, rest in peace. Reading the eulogy here, it is guaranteed that he was a noble man. A man who ruled for so long and did good to his country and the population, irrespective of religion and nationality. There are a lot of politicians in our country, who need to understand that the focus should be that of development and not religious and political divide.

He took over a country which was just a village and transformed it into one of the most modern, environmentally friendly country in the world. When you drive in Muscat you feel you are driving in a garden city and not a desert. And it is not a concrete jungle like Dubai and Singapore. The citizens of the country are very modest and very friendly. Sultan Qaboos loved his people and people adored him. I have never seen any world leader unviresally liked like him. Oman is a country with limited resources and should be a benchmark how to productively use these resources for great and sustainable infrastructure.Wish his successor HM Haitham well. Hope he takes Oman to greater heights based on platform of universal brotherhood whose foundations were laid by Sultan Qaboos

His Majesty Sultan Qaboos was a great visionary, peace lover and a great just ruler of Oman. May Almighty grant eternal peace to his noble soul.

A great Architect who planned, designed the new Era of Oman and for the people of Oman. A gentle ambassador of PEACE, who led the country OMAN to the path of progress.
You will not find such a great and wonderful Sultan and a second country like Oman for its natural beauty and the just and kind hearted Omani people. We shall miss you our Dear Sultan Qaboos Bin Said forever. You will be remembered forever.
May The Almighty God grant him eternal rest and peace for his soul and looking for a similar dynamic leader for Oman to continue the aspirations of citizens and people living in Oman.

Our heart felt condolences to all the Royal Family Members, Diwan of Royal Court, members of the Defense council and the Chairmen of the Supreme Court, the Consultative Council and the State Council and all the Citizens and Expats in Oman.

    RIP the ruler of Oman.
When Indian President Shanker Dayal Sharma went to Oman on an official visit, this Sultan came to the airport to receive him, though according to their protocol, Sultan was not going to receive PM and Presidents at the airport. When the plane landed, he climbed the stairs and went to our President and greeted him. and came down behind the president respectfully.
After getting down, he signaled the driver to go and drove the President to his palace himself.
Later, when asked, why he did so, he replied, "I did not go to receive the President, but my teacher." While studying at Poona University, Shanker Dayal Sharma was his professor.

Death of Qaboos bin Said marks the end of a very long chapter. Despite his many struggles against the rebels, he provided a very stable and development-oriented Government for exactly 50 years. Omanis have lost a great leader.

Within the GCC, being Ibadi, he stood out from the others. He avoided getting into any wars with anyone.

He has always remained a very good friend of India, even to the extent of many military-level arrangements.

Just for the record, his father Said bin Taimur was exiled to Britain in 1970 where he died two years later (1972).

Late Sultan Qubz of Oman was a very pragmatic leader, well educated and well acclimatized with so many challenges relating to the Persian Gulf region from the time he took over from his father thru a peaceful transition.

Sultan Qubz has witnessed so many changes throughout the Persian Gulf region for so may decades, yet he managed the affairs of his Sultanate professionally and smoothly in spite of the fact that the Sultanate was situated in a most strategic and sensitive area of the region.

He managed the affairs of his Sultanate very peacefully and cautiously by keeping everyone happy and satisfied. Sultan Qubz had vast experience of the region, and he kept everyone happy by learning how to satisfy them in their individual as well as group needs.

Oman is a peaceful place. Oman has in possession a great group of intellectuals who will know their future role in that sensitive region. The times are tough and sensitive, but the people of Oman are smart and intelligent, and they will know their future role to keep their people happy, and the place hopefully will remain safe and prosperous.
