Mumbai, Delhi airports witness constant decline of flyers

Mumbai/New Delhi, Jan 10: Year-on-year, India's busiest airports - Delhi and Mumbai are seeing a dip in passengers. The number of flyers is decreasing since 2008 and compared to 2018, 2019 has seen fewer domestic passengers for IGI airport. Meanwhile, the CSMIA witnessed fall in the both domestic and international carriage.

Amid an overall slowing economy, the biggest reason for the decline was Jet Airways’ collapse last April. IndiGo and GoAir’s Pratt & Whitney (PW) engine troubles for their Airbus A320 Neos and SpiceJet’s grounded Boeing 737 Max too contributed to fewer flyers last year. Closure of Pakistan airspace cancelling flights. As a result, Delhi and Mumbai were deprived of the records they were hoping to set in 2019.

IGI saw a 2.6 per cent dip in domestic-cum-international passengers, whereas CSMIA saw a 5.6 per cent drop, domestic-cum-international passengers, in 2019.

The similar case took place back in 2008 when the economy went into a global meltdown. However, it revived in 2009 after low-cost carriers were introduced.
