Mangalore: Christian Leaders Urge Police Chief to Withdraw Cases Against Protesters

Mangalore, Sep 24: The diocesan Christian community led by lawyer Ivan D’Souza presented a memorandum to the superintendent of police (SP) Dr Subramanyeshwar Rao here on Thursday September 24.



They asked him to withdraw the criminal cases registered against innocent protesters who staged peaceful protests on September 14 and 15, 2008, at various churches across the city. 
 
The Christian community had resorted to protests in anguish over the attacks on churches and desecration of the crucifix. The protesters were beaten up by the policemen who did not spare the women and nuns either. 

Over 235 cases were registered at that time and court proceedings on these are in the final stages of hearing. 
 
The community leaders urged Dr Rao to stop arresting innocents from all over the city in relation to the cases. They said that the COD policemen are engaged in such acts under the jurisdiction of various police stations including city rural over the past two weeks.
 
Christian community leaders Susheel Noronha, Fr Onil D’Souza, Fr Anil D’Souza, Fr Valerian Pinto, corporator Mariamma Thomas, and Praveen Patrao were present on the occasion.

    Dear Ronald D How does the home minister come into the picture? The cases are filed against the rioting individuals. It is true that the individuals will have difficulty in getting police clearance for passport application. Stone throwing, police vehicle burning mob should have realized it BEFORE they ventured into such acts! Lesson to be learnt: Do not become a puppet in the hands of greedy leaders (with political aspirations) during communal events...

    Good work, it must be done asap. Many times people have to apply passports or other no objection letters from Police station. If there is a case registered they will not be able to get such letters. Anyhow during those protest march people have done their duty and harm to society. Govt. officials must understand this and relieve them at the earliest.

    Now that the voting is finished, this is a real possibility. Everything from FIR's to voters id, everything is bogus. Nothing happens to the erring officials, but the innocent people have to pay price. To give an instance, in our building with around 100 voters, more than 15 minority voters had different photos in the published list. Though, they have perfect voters ID issued to them, these poor guys have to once again get their photos taken to correct in the list. Recent by-elections where 4 bus load of bogus voters - reminds me administrative mechinery can do anything.
