Bantwal, Jan 6: A person employed in a foreign country was arrested here on Monday January 6 on charges of issuing a 'death threat' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah.
The accused, Anwar, a resident of Peruvai, was arrested by Bantwal circle inspector T D Nagaraj and SI Vinod.
Anwar who is employed abroad had reportedly posted messages opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and had also allegedly made communally provocative remarks. The messages had gone viral on WhatsApp groups and became a headache for the police, it is said.
He thereafter came to his hometown for a visit, during which he was apprehended based on a complaint.
The complaint against Anwar was filed by one Yathish, who alleged that Anwar was trying to create communal unrest by circulating hateful messages about religion. About 10 days ago, Anwar and another person identified as Niyaz, also from Peruvai, had allegedly sent such messages and had even contacted RSS workers in Vamanjoor and youths from Vamanjoor working abroad to ask them to oppose CAA and NRC by putting out messages on WhatsApp. As per Yathish's complaint, Anwar in his messages allegedly threatened to 'kill' Modi and Amit Shah if Muslims were affected by CAA and NRC. Yathish had urged the police to arrest him.
A case has also been registered against Niyaz in Vittal police station in this regard.
