Mangalore, Sep 22: Inter-parish YCS CUP 2009 was held at Vamanjoor church ground on Sunday September 20 and Monday. It was well-organized by YCS Vamanjoor unit, with the help of their director and animator.
The tournament was inaugurated by the parish priest of Vamanjoor, Fr Joseph Cardoza, by releasing the white doves. Vice-president of Parish Council, Jerald Monteiro, secretary, Charles Pais and YCS animator, Sr Ida (SRA), were also present for the inaugural function held at 12.00 pm on Sunday. In his inaugural address, Fr Cardoza exhorted the participants to exhibit their talents.
16 parishes in cricket and eight parishes in the throwball event, participated in this tournament. Vamanjoor church campus was overflowing with spectators, with the supporters of individual teams cheering their respective teams on both the days.
YCS Cup - 2009 was won by the Bondel parish in both the events, defeating Angelore in cricket finals and Vamanjoor in the throwball finals.
It was an opportunity provided to the Young Christian Students, to exhibit their talents and to show team spirit. The spectators enjoyed every moment of the tournament. This tournament was a great success and indeed created history of sorts at the Vamanjoor church ground, considering the enthusiastic environment in which it was held and the number of people assembled to witness the tournament.
The inaugural programme was compered by Vinitha Baptist (secretary). Avin Mascarenhas (president), welcomed the gathering. Neha Rodrigues proposed vote of thanks. Through out the tournament, running commentary was given by Darel D’souza, Jeevan Lobo and Joseph Alvares.
At the end of the tournament, a presentation ceremony was held at 5.30 pm at the church ground. Fr Joseph Cardoza ( parish priest of Vamanjoor), Fr Charles Menezes ( city Varado YCS director), Fr Rony ( assistant parish priest of Bondel), Jerald Monteiro (vice-president of parish council) and Charles Pais (secretary of parish council) were present at the valedictory ceremony. Fr Cardoza and Fr Menezes congratulated the winning teams with their messages and distributed the prizes.
Hansie from Bondel was adjudged the best batsman, Malan from Bondel took away the the ‘bowler of the tournament’ award, while Denver from Angelore was adjudged the ‘Man of The Series’.
