Mangaluru, Dec 31: During police investigation, reportedly, it was found that the ambition of an organization to establish its political supremacy by cashing in on the controversy created by the enactment of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was behind the violence unleashed in the city on December 19.
An organization had planned to utilise the opportunity created by the reverses Congress party has been facing in the district politically. This organization has been attempting to attract Muslim youth away from the Congress fold. Those connected with this organization have been unleashing hate messages concerning Triple Talaq, Article 370 etc through social websites towards bringing young people together to work against the government. During the questioning of arrested accused, the police have realized that the organization had decided to hold protests against CAA in a major way and organized secret meetings to achieve this goal. This was one of the major causes behind the anti-CAA violence here, the police are said to have found.
So far, the police have arrested 20 persons relating to the violence, and in response to request made by the city police commissioner, the people have provided over 10,000 documents to the department. In the meantime, magisterial inquiry by Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha, and investigation by criminal investigation department (CID) team led by superintendent of police Rahul Kumar Shahapurwala, are in progress. There are chances of the CID police too making some arrests, it is learnt.
During the questioning of 20 arrested accused, the police came to know that they do not know what are NRC and CAA and their implications. The accused have been providing varying answers, and the general response is that the government has been implementing an Act that is meant to be used against them. It is clear that hands of the unknown have been using social websites to target young minds, vitiate them, and use them for unleashing violence for its own benefit.
