Kolkata, Dec 26: West Bengal chief minister Mamatha Banerjee has announced Rs 5 lac compensation to Jaleel and Nausheen’s families, who lost lives in police open firing, when protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned violent in Mangaluru.
Banerjee made this statement while addressing a rally against the CAA at Kolkata.
Banerjee’s statement comes after Karnataka CM B S Yediyurappa, withdrew the ex gratia payment announced for Jaleel and Nausheen’s families.
Yediyurappa declared that the compensation will be released, only after charges prove that Nausheen and Jaleel did not participate in protests and are innocent. The CM’s statement was severely criticized by the opposition and former CM Siddaramaiah called Yediyurappa ‘inhumane’ and ‘cruelly communal’.
The Delhi Wakf Board has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lac to the families of men who died in protests in Mangaluru and UP.
