Mangaluru, Dec 26: The onion prices that are hovering around Rs 130 to 150 a kg now might go up further as imports from Turkey have been suspended because of the rising onion prices in that country. Imports from Turkey had helped the prices of onion to ease a little bit.
The Turkish government has suspended export of onions because of the rise in prices there. It is expected that onion prices might go up by ten to 15 percent now.
India used to get onions from Egypt and China in addition to Turkey. These governments have also placed certain restrictions on onion exports, it is said.
Businessmen expect the trend of price rise to continue till mid-January when local onion is expected to enter the market.
Out of over 7,000 tonnes of onions imported by India during the current fiscal, Turkey accounted for over 50 percent, it is learnt.
