Mangaluru, Dec 21: Soon after curfew was relaxed in the city for three hours on Saturday December 21 following orders from chief minister B S Yediyurappa, people flocked to the markets and supermarkets to stock up on groceries and other essentials.
Curfew was imposed in the city from December 19 to December 22 midnight, after protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent, leading to pelting of stones by protesters and police opening fire. The protests claimed the lives of two persons, Jaleel and Nausheen, adding to the tally of deaths in anti-CAA protests across the nation.
On Saturday, CM Yediyurappa who was in the city to assess the situation told mediapersons that he had asked the district administration to relax curfew hours between 3 pm and 6 pm on December 21 and from 9 am to 6 pm on December 22.
Soon after the announcement was made and curfew relaxed, people swarmed to city's stores and markets to buy groceries and other necessities. Places like Urwa Market brimmed with people and shopkeepers made brisk business.
After almost two days under curfew, the relaxation came as a relief for the weekend crowd, if only for a few hours. With no major incidents of violence reported, the city is slowing limping back to normalcy and roads are once again seeing some traffic.
