Mumbai, Dec 15: Putting staffers assumptions to rest, the BEST management officials have clarified that the new conductorless buses will not cause job loss. The new buses are introduced to provide point to point service where there is no real need for a conductor to be on board.
On Friday, there were protests by BEST workers affiliated to the biggest union led by Shashank Rao who staged a dharna outside Wadala bus depot against conductor-less buses. The union feared that this was 'the first step to privatisation' costing joblessness to conductors.
However, BEST officials stressed that the new buses will not impact the jobs of the conductors. They stated that buses with conductors will continue to operate. Meanwhile, for point to point service, conductorless buses ensured everyone bought a ticket at the time of boarding thereby reducing operational cost.
