Mangalore, Sep 7: Keralites in the city celebrated the festival of Onam with cultural events and programmes organized by the Kerala Samajam Trust on Monday September 7.
The two-day programme ‘Onam Utsavam’ ended with a valedictory function at the Town Hall accompanied by several cultural competitions and programmes.
Speaking at the valedictory function mayor Shankar Bhat said that the people from Kerala have the ability to achieve their goals, so they are leading in all sections of the society. “Their capacity in facing challenges is an inspiration to others”, he said.
He distributed prizes to winners in cultural and sport events. Students from the Malayali community who secured high marks in SSLC and PUC were also honoured with scholarships.
K V Poulose, president, Kerala Samajam Trust, presided over the function. Vice-presidents Balagopan, Narayan, K K Kunhi Krishnan, treasurer Radhakrishnan, and secretary O K Bhaskar, were also present.
The Onam Utsavam was inaugurated at T V Raman Pai Hall on Sunday September 6, where the competitions and cultural events were organized.
A musical and comedy show ‘Twenty-20’ was also arranged as part of the cultural programme. The comic duo of Baiju Jose and Babu Jose performed in the comedy show.
