Panaji, Sep 5: Goa will host sixth edition of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki Sangeet Mahotsav on September 12 and 13 in the capital city of panaji.
Pt Abhishekhi, a Goa-born nationally famed classical music genius, is hailed for single handedly reviving the Marathi musical theatre in 1960s.
“The festival in Goa is not only for entertainment value but also to instill sense of classical music in younger generation and introduce them to various gharanas,” Sumedha Desai, a local organizer of this event, said.
Abhisheki, who was born at Mangueshi village in Goa and later settled in Mumbai, has been honoured with the festival since 1998 by Goa Kala Academy after his demise.
“Initially for two to three years there was no much response for the festival but later on it picked up tremendously. In many performances the auditorium is house full,” Shaunak Abhisheki, Pt Abhisheki’s son, who is also a part of the festival said.
The festival which will be held at Kala Academy complex on the bank of River mandovi will have Pt Rajan and Pt Sajan Mishra, Pt Ajay Pohankar, Sucheta Bhide Chafekar, Pt Kaivalyakumar Gurav, Pt Sanjeev Abhyankar, Uma Garg and others participating in it.
The organizers during the press conference held today said that it is very difficult to get the sponsorers for the classical events especially for the state like Goa where business proportion is not much high.
Desai said that many young local talents have got to present their art outside the state after their performance for this festival.
“The festival has introduced many artist to the world and we will keep the tradition on this time around too,” she said.
