New York, Sep 3: India's Sania Mirza crashed out of the US Open second round after being handed one of her worst career defeat by Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-0, 6-0 at Flushing Meadows here Wednesday.
The 10th seed Italian took just 50 minutes to complete the whitewash.
Sania, who had reached the fourth round of US Open in her breakthrough year in 2005, committed 28 unforced errors to her opponents 10.
Sania had a break point each in the first and second set, but failed to convert while Pennetta converted all her six break points in the match.
Pennetta, who is the the first Italian woman to reach the world's top 10, will face Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak, who upset French 17th seed Amelie Mauresmo 6-4, 6-0.
"You can't say much when you lose like that," Sania said.
"She (Pennetta) was exceptionally well today and everything was working for her. There are days like that and you have to move forward," she said.
Sania will be now pinning her hopes in doubles and mixed doubles. She will be playing with new partners in both the events.
In women's doubles, she will play with Italian Francesca Schiavone. They will face Ekaterina Dzehalevich of Belarus and Renata Voracova of Czech Republic in the first round.
Sania, who won the Australian Open mixed doubles title with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi, will partner Daniel Nestor of Canada here. The duo will meet Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan and Australian Ashley Fisher in the first round.
Bhupathi has teamed up with American Liezel Huber and the duo have been given top billing.
