Udupi, Dec 4: Department of women and child welfare with child protection and labour unit, in a joint operation, rescued fourteen children found begging in Udupi and Manipal.
The number of people begging carrying children in Manipal, Udupi and Udyavar had increased during the last fifteen days. The sights of women holding small children were common in the city. Public complaints were received by various departments. The concerned department kept an eye on their begging.
Fourteen children were rescued in the operation today. Four female children among them have been sent to Balamandira and the remaining ten boys and girls have been shifted to Spoorthi Vishwasada Mane, Shankarapura for rehabilitation.
Officials said that women are arriving along with children from Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and north Karnataka and earn money through begging.
“The beggars migrate to other places after begging in Udupi for some time. Their responsibility is handed over to rehabilitation centers and education officers will take suitable action,” said children protection observer Prabhakar Acharya.
