Udupi, Aug 31: Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel lamented the fact that the education, now-a-days, has been reduced to playing the role of a means to bag employment, rather than of gaining knowledge.
He was speaking after participating in a programme organized on Sunday August 30 at the Buntara Bhavan, Padubidri for the distribution of student scholarships from out of 'Sirimudi' endowment fund.
Padmanabh S Payyade of Mumbai Buntara Sangh expressed concern about the diminishing influence of Tulu folk arts in the day-to-day lives of the coastal residents.
Belgaum City Corporation mayor Yellappa Kurubar, who inaugurated the programme, said that he became the mayor because of the fact that the Bunts settled in Belgaum strongly stood by him. He said, 90% of the people from Karnataka Coast, who have settled down in Belgaum, supported him.
On this occasion, Yellappa Kurubar, achievers Merkala Tyampanna Shetty, Krishna Y Shetty and Kaup Vishwanath Shetty were felicitated. Student scholarships amounting to four lac rupees were disbursed to 312 students.
Padubidri Buntara Sangh president Santoor Bhaskar Shetty, Arun N Shetty of Mumbai All India Institute of Local Self, Buntara Sangh secretary Navinchandra J Shetty, treasurer Srinath Hegde and others were present.
