Bagalkot, Oct 24: When the whole country is up against cow theft and slaughter, a rare event has taken place in the Teachers' Colony of Jamakhandi in the district, where a baby shower ritual (Seemantha)
was held for a pregnant cow.
It is an Indian tradition to hold baby shower when a woman gets pregnant for the first time and send her to her parent's house.
Right from the time of Vedas cow is revered in India. There is a strong belief among Indian that 33 crore Gods and Goddesses live in a cow. Accordingly, the first pregnancy of a cow was celebrated by the Jakati family that lives in the Teachers' Colony of Jamakhandi.
Shobha Jakati, a resident of Jamakhandi has a domestic cow in her home. She believes that from the time she has started rearing that cow, all good things have happened to her family. Because of this strong belief, she got excited when the cow got pregnant for the first time and decided to have baby shower event for it. She printed the invitation cards and invited her family, friends and neighbours.
All the rituals that are a followed during the traditional baby shower of a woman were carried out in the case of this domestic cow also. The cow was draped with a saree, aarati (lighted lamp) was done and traditional Shobhane folk songs were sung. All invitees were fed with sumptous lunch.
Public has lauded the unique event held by the Jakati family and showering of love on their pet animal.
