Veteran Artiste T R Shetty bags Yakshagana Kala Award - 2009

Mumbai, Aug 4: Metro- based Billavara Association president Jaya C Suvarna announced that veteran Yakshagana artiste Timmappa Ramanna (TR) Shetty, has qualified for the Yakshagana Kala Award – 2009, in recognition of his significant contributions to the Yakshagana field. The award had been instituted by Jaya C Suvarna, in memory to his mother Acchu Chandu Poojary.
T R Shetty hails from Kalia village under Guruvayanakere gram panchayat in Beltangady taluk, Dakshina Kannada district. He developed interest in Yakshagana art form since his early childhood, learnt the art from veteran Yakshagana artiste late Krishna Bhat, while serving with Sri Durgaparameshwari temple troupe. He pursued training in Yakshagana dance form, from veteran artiste, the late Kuria Vittal Shastry and the late Padre Chandu at Sri Manjunatheshwar Yakshagana Lalit Kala Kendra, Dharmasthala. He got the touring experience while working with Sri Dharmasthala Yakshagana troupe, during 1972 - 73. His Yakshagana skills were sharpened while working with experienced artistes like Kumble Sundar Rao, Govind Bhat, Narayan Hegde, Patala Venkataraman Bhat, Chandragiri Ambu, Pakkala Kunji Krishna Naik, Yempekatte Ramayya Rai, Sridar Bhandary, Prabhakar Joshi, Kadatoka Manjunat Bhagavat and others.
T R Shetty has been serving as a lead Yakshagana artiste since 1974, having donned different roles in various mythological episodes. Hence, he has qualified for the award, because of his significant contributions of over three and a half decades to Yakshagana, Suvarna explained.
The award will be conferred on T R Shetty, in a glittering function, scheduled to be held at Billava Bhavan, here on Sunday August 23.
The award consists of citation letter, cash component and mementoes.
