Udupi, Jul 27: BJP state president and Udupi – Chikmagalur MP D V Sadanand Gowda urged the union government to initiate necessary measures for the inclusion of more languages including Tulu, in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, taking into consideration the recent changes in social and literary spheres in the country.
Gowda also sought details from the centre, about the measures that are being taken by it, to evolve a set of standards or criteria for the inclusion of more languages in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution, as recommended by a committee set up during September 2003, under the chairmanship of Sitakant Mohapatra.
Union minister of state for home Ajay Maken stated in his reply, that the committee headed by Sitakant Mohapatra had submitted its report in the year 2004, recommending certain guidelines to decide on the qualifying standards for the inclusion of various languages under the eighth schedule of the constitution. The report is under review by the officials of the concerned department, and no time frame can be fixed for the inclusion of new languages under the eighth schedule, the minister stated.
