Udupi, Oct 6: It was decided to give one month time for clearing the plastic bags above 50 microns and then to ban the plastic completely in the meeting held with the merchants at the Satyamurthi auditorium of the city municipality on Saturday, October 5.
MLA Raghupati Bhat presided over the meeting, he said, that he will speak with DC Jagadish in this regard. In future, the plastic bags which are above 50 microns and which contain official information about the manufacturer should be only used.
MLA Bhat himself inspected many shops in the city about the non-usage of plastic bags. He is creating awareness among those who are using it at present.
Speaking on the occasion, Social worker Joseph Rebello said, "It is a challenge to make the children know about the harm caused by plastic. Alternatives for plastic should be informed to children."
MLA Bhat said, "Merchants have to support the administration in reducing the usage of plastic carry bags. The waste treatment unit at Alevoor is piled up with more waste now. This unit which is spread over an area of 22 acres is filled with garbage and is getting converted to another yard. People themselves have to understand this."
