Udupi: No fishing since months - Fisherfolk seek divine intervention

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (PH)

Udupi, Oct 5: Parsin Fishermen’s Association, Malpe, conducted a pooja and Daiva Darshana at Bobbarya temple, Kalmady. The pooja was conducted on regard to the problems faced by the fishermen. They sought blessings from the deity.

Chandra Salian, vice-president of Parsi Fishermen’s Association, Malpe, spoke to the media. He said that fishing occupation is followed by the people from their ancestral times. “We are mastered only in fishing business. We are not able to adapt to other businesses. People have taken huge amount of loans from banks as well as lenders. It has been two months and there is hardly any business for fishermen. People here are leading life with great difficulty.

“There are 140 Boats and in each boat there are at least 40 workers. There is no business since two months and some even feel like committing suicide is the only way they are left with,” he said.

He requested the central as well as state government to show humanity towards them, help the fishermen and give them some solutions. He also said that Bobbarya helped them in the past and they believe in his powers and they are sure that he will give a solution to their problems.

Around 200 people from Malpe were present in the temple who sought the blessings from Bobbarya.

Unscientific way of fishing is the reason!
Those good old days fishing was not allowed till Aati-Sona (3 months) not because of only heavy monsoon reason, it was and it is a breeding time!
*even insurance companies gives insurance for fishing trawlers only 9 months insurance excluding 3 months breeding period.
Now fishermen are fishing throughout the year without giving breeding time then which magic can provide good harvest of fishing?

Why are our poor Fishermen are facing "choppy waves" in their daily fishing activities? What are the reasons? Daiji world please clarify on the following:
    1. Is it because of their meagre catch at sea?
    2. Is it because of no takers for their catch?

Please shed light on above. Thanks

Why are our Fisher folk facing such high waves?
    1. Is it for insufficient catch at sea?
    2. Is it for no takes for the daily catch?
    Please clarify?

The biggest curse for Fishermen is they not adopting to Sustainable fishing. They are catching Juvenile Fishes right after the Monsoon progress when the fish come to shallow waters to breed. If we don't allow the Juvenile to Grow and breed how can we get more fishes. At times we can see there are more Boats on the Shallow Sea than the Cars on the Street. There must be some kind of self control with in the community or else it is as good as cutting the branch one is sitting or the same old Moral of a story Killing the Goose. The Light fishing , Bull net fishing , deep sea bottom trawling as well as gill nets have kind of wiped out many species.

Our ancestors strongly believed in one saying which says God Says " Neenu Ondu Maadu Naanu Hattu Madikoduthene" . It means our fishermen , our farmers and all of us who depend on natural resource to survive needs to do a lot. we must understand that, we are consuming in advance what our 100s of Next Generations have to consume. we are not leaving anything for them but misery and we still shameless breed in the name of the same God.

So no matter how many Poojas , Masses or Aajans we conduct - the story remains the same. Are we concerned about what is going to be left to our next generation ? Have you seen our grand parents used to plant a fruit bearing tree or a coconut tree at their ripe age of 80s or 90s which they very well knew they don't survive to eat it? but , still they did plant saying that, somebody who survives will eat. But, now we don't even allow a small little tree which stands in our compound while building a house or apartment to build one extra room which we are never going to use it. Just show off. even the house we are building now is not sure about sheltering our children when we are gone.

Well analysed. The fishermen seem to know this, but pretending to be innocent by asking the bhootha. By the way, isn't this the same bhootha who they asked to find the missing boat ?

1 If human population is controlled, fish population will increase.
2 Fishlings should not be destroyed.
3 Large scale destruction of fish for commercial purposes e.g fishmeal should be minimised.
4 Adopt the Japanese way of Satoyama I.e. live in harmony with nature.

Parsin fisherfolk should let go off young baby fish. It is a tragedy to see heaps of young baby surmai in their hundreds being auctioned off for much lesser price as compared to adult fish grow that get better rate in market. Overfishing is a result of this greed of netting even baby fish.

God is not poor so you no need to spend for him. Here lot of things you spent upon is not coming to use for anyone. Instead of these expenses you would have been arranged lunch for some poor people who are planning for suicide , their prayers are enough. It’s my opinion.
