Kalia of 'Sholay' film Viju Khote passes away at 78

Mumbai, Sep 30 (IANS): Veteran actor of Marathi and Hindi films and stage Viju Khote passed away early Monday morning, family sources said.

He was 78 and is survived by his sister Shubha Khote, who is also an actor.

Renowned for comedy roles, Viju was famed for the evergreen lines: "Kitne Aadmi The?", "Do, Sarkar" from the film "Sholay" in which he played dacoit Gabbar Singh's bumbling sidekick Kaalia.

In a career spanning around six decades, Khote worked in over 300 films, including "Phir Hera Pheri", Andaz Apna Apna," besides some television shows and ads.

Even though Viju Khote played small roles in Sholay and other films, he left a lasting impression and acting in over 300 films in itself is a big achievement. On a side note regarding death of actors, I would like to mention here about a very rare coincidence. Actors Amjad Khan, Feroz Khan and Vinod Khanna died on the same date (27 April) in different years. Coincidentally the film “Qurbani” in which all three played major roles was also released on 27 April 1980.

Gabbar alias Amjad Khan is the one who was the real hero of the movie Sholay. What a performance?

Even Basanti and Jaya Bhaduri were great plus the great Sanjeev Kumar.

Amitabh and Dharmendra look more like comedians in the movie.

Viju kote has played his part well. So is Hangal. superb acting.

Sholay was the first Indian film to have a stereophonic soundtrack and to use the 70 mm widescreen format. Such a fantastic movie from action, script, music, dialogue delivery, photography and so on. All the characters were well played by the actors involved but Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kumar played unparalleled role in the movie.
The dialogue "jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete so jaa, so ja nahi toh Gabbar Singh aa jayega". What a phrase!
I do not have any count how many times I watched the movie in theater, TV and never feel bored to repeat watching.
