Konkani Bhasha Mandal Demands Konkani Academy, Bhavan in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jul 18: A delegation of Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Maharashtra with a demand to set up Konkani Academy and Konkani Bhavan in the state, met Chief Minister Ashok Chauhan on Saturday July 18 morning.



Chauhan who met the delegation at his official residence, `Varsha’ assured that he would hold discussion with the concerned departments on the matter. Delegation was led by Mandal president P N Shanbaug.

Vice-president John D’Silva, honorary secretary Lawrence D’Souza Kamani, Joint treasurer Leo Fernandes, Walter D’Souza Jerimeri, Benedicta Rebello, Lawrence Coelho, Stany Dias and Alphonse D’Souza too were part of the delegation.

    Besides Mumbai, Konkani is widely spoken in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Sawantwadi and parts of Raigadh district. Further Konkani which was regarded as a dialect of Marathi is now a full fledged literary language. Therefore, an academy for the language in Maharashtra is indispensable.
