Mangaluru, Sep 17: The department of Physical Education of the Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) inaugurated the two-day Mysuru zonal intercollegiate basketball tournament on Monday, September 16.
Eight teams from various colleges affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, will vie for the coveted basket ball Mysore Zonal Championship at the fully air-conditioned Indoor Sports Complex of the Father Muller Medical College.
An inaugural programme was held with a prayer song by Haritha and team, followed by the welcome address by Dr J P Alva, Dean, FMMC. Dr J P Alva welcomed the teams and urged them to play in the best spirit of the game. He showered praise on the management for providing the state of the art indoor sport complex. The sport complex has a basket ball court and badminton courts, with a gymnasium and table tennis space. The indoor stadium is used for sports related activities such as yoga and zumba. He wished that the best team win. He also introduce the chief guest for the tournament, Sowkin Shetty, who is an international Basket Ball player having been ranked number one in the 3*3 format. He has his roots in Mangaluru and is part of the Mangala Basket Ball Club.
Sowkin Shetty, emphasized the importance of sports in his life and how it has sculpted his future. Sports make oneself more disciplined, coordinated, makes one learn the team spirit and makes one a good leader. Sports id required to maintain good health and is a good habit to acquire.
Fr Ajith Menezes, administrator of the Father Muller Medical College, in his presidential address essayed the importance of sports in character building and endurance. He said that there are lessons to be learnt in loosing as well as, lessons to be learnt in winning. He wished that the teams hope to be better players and champions be successful. He prayed that the almighty bless them and keep than safe. He also was delighted to know that the chief guest flew in for this occasion from Ludhiana this morning and would be going back the same day.
The director of Physical Education of FMMC, Chandrashekara S N, wished the players all success.
