Bengaluru, Sep 15: "Because of excessive rainfall and floods, the farmers have lost their crops. They are facing a crisis in their lives, and are feeling that committing suicide is the only option left for them. The union government has not disbursed any relief to the state to face the situation, and the state government, which is coward, does not have the guts to question the central government," opined former chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah.
He took on the state and central government through a series of tweets. He held the central government directly responsible for rising number of farmer deaths in the state, and took umbrage at the delaying tactics employed on this issue by the union government.
"I hereby extend my sympathies to the bereaved families of five farmers from Haveri, Gadag and Chikkamagaluru districts who committed suicide after losing their houses, farms and agricultural fields in the deluge. Hundreds of other farmers too are feeling helpless and are thinking on similar lines. The central and state government do exit but they are as good as dead," he said in curtly worded tweets.
He noted that he has been coming across cases in which notices are served by banks for clearing loans although the farmers are reeling under the after-affects of floods."If the state government still has some humanitarian concern, it should immediately stop such cruel tendencies," he demanded. He said that the central government has become bankrupt hence it has no money to disburse compensation to formers. "If I am wrong, the government should bring out a white paper on the economic condition of the country," he demanded.
