Dubai: Airport staff steals mangoes from baggage -Faces trial in court

Dubai, Sep 13: A baggage staff at the Dubai International Airport stood trial at the Court of First Instance on Thursday for theft.

The accused, a 27-year-old Indian worker, had reportedly stolen two mangoes (worth about Dh6) from the baggage of a traveller on August 11, 2017. The defendant, a public employee, confessed to the theft and said he stole two pieces of mangoes from a fruit box that was to be shipped to India as he was thirsty and looking for water.

He said he had been working at Terminal 3 of the airport. His duties included loading travellers' luggage onto the conveyer belt from the container and vice-versa.

Though he was arrested and his place was searched by the police in April 2018, no stolen items were found there.

A security officer also confirmed that he saw the accused on warehouse CCTV cameras opening the Dubai-India travellers' luggage and stealing. A ruling will be pronounced on September 23, said a report in Khaleej Times.

    It is really degrading to our country ,when such instances are happening.Sure he was hungry and thirsty for example,one mango would be sufficient for the moment.Second he was full aware of the punishment in UAE.when steals.Today mango ,tomorrow something else.One should work honestly.Whether you steal a arecanut or a elephat,it is robbery.Hope he gets a warning and amild punishment.But punishment must be given as a warning.otherwise people will be bold and try tomorrow something else.Hope he learned the lesson for life.

    We were travelling in IX383 on 11-9-2019 from Mangalore to Dubai after a flight delay of 3 hours at 12.20 PM. Many of our luggage locks were broken at Mangalore airport and we lost many valuables. Even the pictures are circulated in social media. What action will Mangalore airport authorities will take... In Dubai Mango is so valuable then no value for costly stuff we lost from our baggage? Once we handover the luggage after security check to the airline staff then its their responsibility to return our luggage intact with the security seal added by airport security.
    If their staff itself break the seal and open the bag who will be held responsible for such events. Its a big security risk and must be looked into.

    Those who are commenting that it was just mangoes must realise that Dubai airport is one of the best airports in the world and these incidences however small are bad for reputation. Think if something from your own luggage was removed without your knowledge or permission. Moreover it brings shame to us as this was done by an Indian in a friendly country.

    It is unfortunate that the idiot baggage handler stole just two mangoes from a passenger's baggage. It is a shame for that Indian to stoop so low. Since the case is two years old he should be pardoned for his offence. This is nothing as sometimes the whole baggage goes missing for some reason or the other. CCTV helps in many such cases.

    Suppose he had stolen full Box, then he should be punished. But in this case he has admitted that he was hungry and taken only 2 mangos. Only warning will be the best punishment .

    The thief justifies stealing mangoes because he was hungry and thirsty! I am sure the airport had many places where one could buy some thing to eat and a glass of water. Why steal?

    There is a big difference between stealing Mangoes from the Airport baggage and your neighbors farm.
