Kundapur, Sep 9: A woman filed complaint in the town police station here against her husband, who sought to divorce her by means of triple talaq, which was banned recently in the country. The husband was arrested by police.
It is gathered that this is the first ever triple talaq case to have been registered in Udupi district after the union government amended the act to nullify the method of divorce through utterance of the word, 'talaq' thrice.
The woman, Alfia Akhther (29), has complained against her husband, Haneef Syed (32) from Hiriadka, and his parents, Abbas Sayyed and Jaithoon, as well as her husband's sister, Ayesha.
Alfia said that her marriage with Haneef was solemnized at Moodugopady village on July 4 this year. She said that at the time of marriage, the family of her husband had demanded for payment of dowry amounting to five lac rupees, but her parents could pay only two lac rupees. "Because of this, my husband and his family members used to harass me on a regular basis. On August 15, my husband sought to divorce me by uttering the word ‘talaq’ thrice, she said in her complaint.
The central government had brought amendment to the act and banned triple talaq on July 31 this year. On the basis of the above complaint, case under Muslim Women's Protection of Divorce Rights Act, dowry harassment and family harassment provisions has been registered in the town police station.
