Udupi, Sep 8: The hiked rates for traffic rule violation cases came into effect in the district from September 5 onward. During the three days since then, a sum of Rs 1,75,800 was collected by way of on the spot fines in the district. Out of the above, Rs 1,12,500 was collected on Saturday alone.
The split figures of violations are 66 cases relating to not wearing seatbelts and 72 two-wheeler riders riding without helmets. In some cases, court notices have been issued. About 300 cases were registered and fine was collected on the spot.

On Saturday, a ceremony for taking over charge by the new office bearers of the students union was organized in the city. A procession of the office bearers of the union was taken out in over ten open vehicles, which were accompanied by various other vehicles. The police had provided security for the procession.
But after the procession reached MGM College in the evening, several students tried to enter the college ground. Thereafter some were stopped and fined for violation of traffic rules, non-possession of driving licence, documents etc by the police.
The enhanced fines, it is learnt, are yet to be implemented in Mangaluru, although city police commissioner, Dr Harsha P S, had said on Friday that software upgradation process had been almost completed.
