Puttur, Sep 8: Police personnel of Uppinangady station have successfully cracked the case of theft from R K Jewellers at Uppinangady on August 16 this year. They have succeeded in recovering some of the gold and silver ornaments as well as an Eicher truck used for committing the crime. Five other accused are on the run, and efforts to arrest them are continuing.
Ornaments worth about Rs 27 lac rupees had been stolen from the store. The persons now arrested have been identified as Rameshbhai Sisodia (32) and Sunil alias Sandeep (27) from Dahod district, Gujarat, Jameel alias Chacha (60) from Boondi district, Rajasthan. 185.59 grams of gold ornaments valued at Rs 7.05 lac and 3,972 grams silver ornaments worth Rs 2.26 lac as well as a truck worth Rs 23 lac have been confiscated from the accused. The total worth of items seized amount to Rs 32.31 lac.
The theft had happened during the intervening night between August 15 and 16. The thieves had opened the shutters of the jewellery store by using gas cutter. They had taken away 650.69 grams of gold ornaments and seven kg silver ornaments totally worth about Rs 27 lac. The theft had come to light during the early hours of August 16. Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police had formed three teams to probe the case.
The police teams initially got the lead about the vehicle used for the theft. On that basis they investigated the case and found out the culprits. The truck was taken into custody from Katwara in Dahod, Gujarat.
The team of police comprising Puttur rural circle inspector, Nagesh Kadri, Uppinangady sub-inspector, Nandakumar M M, Puttur town station assistant sub-inspector, Chidanand Rai and Praveen Devadiga of district crime intelligence bureau, acting under the directions of deputy superintendent of police, Dinakar Shetty and assistant superintendent of police, Dr /vikram Amate and guidance of district superintendent of police, Laxmi Prasad, succeeded in catching hold of the criminals.
The police said that this is a notorious gang of criminals, which used to visit different states on other work and planned thefts when returning. Raliyati in Gujarat and Divoli area in Rajasthan happen to be the base of these thieves.
It is learnt that lorry driver, Bhagwan Singh, had plotted the theft when coming to Bengaluru on hire. He had committed theft with the help of Sunil, Jameel and five others before fleeing.
