Bantwal, Sep 7: Six students and a college employee were injured in an accident involving a lorry loaded with sheep, and a college bus at Koovettila near Kabaka here in the evening of Friday Sep 6.
The injured students, Faziya (16) from Gadiyara, who is a student of Markaz Huda women's college at Kumbra, Famiza (17) from Kudman in Kedila village, and Safida (16) from Kudman in Kedila village, stand admitted into Pragati Specialty Hospital. The other injured, Fatimat Disha (15) and Ayishat Hibha (17) from Patrakkodi in Kedila, college employee, Jayanti (40) from Harasina Makki Palastadka, and her daughter, Praviksha (12), a student of Little Flower School, Puttur, were admitted into Mahaveera Hospital, Puttur. Bus driver, Abdul Khader from Patrakkodi in Kedila village, escaped with minor injuries.
The lorry involved with the accident was bringing a load of sheep from Gujarat to Puttur while the bus was ferrying students of Markaz Huda Women's PU College at Kumbra. The accident happened at the road bend at Kuvettila in Idkidu village on Mani-Mysuru state highway. The students were being taken in the school bus to Patrakkodi.
Local people who rushed to the spot on getting information arranged to admit the injured persons into private hospitals in Puttur and informed traffic police stations in Vittal and Puttur. Traffic had been thrown out of gear on account of the accident. The police personnel, who arrived at the sport, regulated traffic.
The front portion of the bus and the right side of the lorry were damaged in the accident. Lorry driver, identified as Haneef from Gujarat, escaped unhurt. Police team led by Puttur town circle police inspector Thimmappa Naik, traffic station police personnel and Vittal station sub-inspector, Yallappa, obtained details, cleared the vehicles from the road and facilitated smooth movement of traffic. A case stands registered relating to this accident on the basis of complaint lodged by the bus driver.
172 sheep were being brought in the lorry from Gujarat to Puttur. In the accident, 22 sheep died as the right side of the lorry was impacted. A few of the surviving sheep were injured. It is said that those sheep which died were given away to local people.
