Beltangady, Aug 19: "Unexpected floods have wreaked havoc in the lives of the people this year. The calamity has destroyed homes and other assets of the people. I will visit the affected people by touring the flood-affected areas and put in maximum efforts to get them maximum relief from the government," promised former chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy.

He was speaking to media persons after visiting Charmadi gram panchayat in Beltangady taluk, and after listening to problems explained to him by the flood-affected people on Sunday August 18 and distributing relief materials.

"When Kodagu district was devastated by floods in the past, I, as chief minister, had sanctioned higher amount of compensation. A sum of Rs 10,000 by way of rent per month to those who lost their houses, and Rs 50,000 for loss of assets were given by me. I also distributed 900 sites, took steps to build houses, and created new extensions," he explained.

He noted that the current government has announced five lac rupees grant for construction of new houses. Noting that this sum is not sufficient for building new houses, he felt that higher amount needs to be given to them. He also said that at the current time of crisis, helping the affected people is more important for him than playing party politics.
