Bantwal, Aug 13: There has been an estimated loss of Rs 30 crore due to rain fury and floods in this taluk. In this connection a team led by local MLA, Rajesh Naik Ulipady, met chief minister, B S Yediyurappa and handed over a petition on Monday August 12, asking him to approve higher compensation to the taluk which has been devastated by heavy rain and floods.
BJP activists welcomed the chief minister on his arrival at Bantwal bypass junction when he was returning from Beltangady to Mangaluru during his tour of flood-hit areas of Dakshina Kannada district. The said appeal that was submitted to the chief minister contained detailed account of loss due to flood and natural disaster in the area, and contained a request for liberal sanction of compensation. The chief minister, responding to it, promised to provide Rs 5,00,000 compensation in case of total destruction of houses, Rs 5,000 rent per month until the house is constructed if the victims are staying in rented house, and disbursal of Rs 10,000 immediately to the victims.
Confident of compensation: MLA Rajesh Naik Ulipady, speaking to reporters later, said that a request seeking fund of Rs 30 crore was submitted to the chief minister with complete documentary evidence of the loss. “Requests for compensation are submitted even for petty shops in the taluk which are affected by floods. I am confident that the chief minister will respond positively. The chief minister will also be informed about the loss incurred by various government departments and there are hopes of getting more compensation,” he stated.
The MLA congratulated officials who were stationed in Bantwal during floods and worked day and night for providing relief to the people in distress, including tahsildar Rashmi S R, officials of all the departments including revenue, municipal council and the police.
