Beltangady: Wellesley Bailey Award Conferred on Kaup Vishwanath Shetty

Beltangady, Jun 17: Sixty six years old Kaup Vishwanath Shetty has bagged the Wellesley Bailey Award from Leprosy Mission International (LMI), for his successful life-long campaign against leprosy. The award was presented to Kaup Vishwanath Shetty by LMI president John Clement, at the awards ceremony held recently in Canada.
Although Kaup Vishwanath Shetty was affected by leprosy when he was 10 years old, he did not lose hope and underwent treatment to get a certificate from the doctors that he had been completely cured of leprosy. He set up ‘Bright India Leprosy Rehabilitation Centre’ at Maddadka, near here during 1980, in order to spearhead a campaign on eradicating leprosy.
Kaup Vishwanath Shetty has authored books on ‘The untold truth about leprosy’ and ‘Provoking thoughts of leprosy,’ to clear the misconceptions prevalent in the society about leprosy. He has toured the country and abroad to educate the students on this aspect in various schools and colleges. He has delivered more than 1,200 lectures to about eight lac students, imparting to them different aspects of leprosy. He has also undertaken a mission to educate the society about leprosy through the local Rotary and Lions Club.
He has been serving full time as the founder executive secretary of Bright India.
