Mangaluru: Cyclonic conditions in sea force trawl boats to return to bases

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 9: Fishing by mechanized boats has just begun after a fishing ban extending to two months to facilitate fish breeding. However, these fishermen had disappointment in store in their initial fishing trip of the season, as they could not undertake fishing because of inclement weather. As per the predictions of the meteorological department, the situation is expected to continue till August 9.

Deep sea fishing boats had begun the season on August 1 with high hopes of better catches. The boats normally undertake eight to ten days to return to bases after leaving their bases. But because of the cyclonic storms which appeared in the sea all of a sudden on August 3, the sea turned tumultuous. As such, the boats could undertake fishing for only three days. All the boats have since returned to their bases. Because of the fact that disturbance as the estuary here is very strong, the boats could not enter the fishing port and hence have been moored at the berth of New Mangalore Port Trust. Some of the boats, which could not return to the city from deep sea fishing trips, have sought shelter in nearby fishing ports at Kannur, Kollam, Karwar etc.
