Puttur, Aug 7: In an incident which happened at Kemmate in Kaniyoor village near Uppinangady on Tuesday August 6 afternoon, a woman who accidentally slipped, was being washed away in a canal before being rescued.

Varija (70) from Kemmate was collecting fodder for her cattle when she accidentally slipped and fell into a canal. Because of immense force of flowing water, she was washed away in the canal for about half a kilometer. She caught hold of the root of a tree at this point and frantically began to shout for help.

A woman, who happened to be her relative, was passing by that way sometime later to bring back her cow that had been left to graze, when she heard the woman's fervent cry for help. She went to the canal, found that the woman was facing a grave situation, and called for help. The locals joined together and rescued Varija in a collective operation, the police said.

Varija was provided treatment at Beltangady government hospital after which she was discharged.
