Moodbidri: Leopard stuck in snare rescued by forest officials

Moodbidri, Aug 7: A leopard that was writhing in pain after it got stuck in a snare at Ashwathapura Berinja under Tenka Mijaru gram panchayat limits was rescued by officials of forest department and Pilikula Nisargadhama.

By the side of the road that goes to Koppadakumeri from Ashwathapura, on the foothills of the hill that is at Berinja, someone had kept a snare to catch wild boar. On the morning of Tuesday, August 6, a female leopard got stuck in that and was trying to untie itself from it. The locals, who noticed this, informed the matter to the forest department immediately.

Senior scientific officer of Pilikula Nisargadhama Vikram Lobo and zookeeper Dinesh gave the anesthesia to the leopard through the gun, under the guidance of H Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of Pilikula Biological Theme Park and Prakash Poojary, zonal forest officer of Moodbidri. Later, the leopard was caught and put in a cage and taken to Pilikula Nisargadhama. The continuous downpour delayed the rescue operation and it went on till the afternoon.

The personnel of forest department, including sub zonal forest officer Ashwath Gatty visited the sport and cooperated in the operation. Hundreds of people gathered on the spot to have a glimpse of the leopard
