Mysuru, Aug 2: A person from Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, was washed away in River Cauvery during his visit to Srirangapatna for immersing his mother's ashes. This incident happened at the Cauvery river confluence at Ganjam in the taluk.

The deceased was Srikanth (47) from Rajajinagar, Bengaluru. He had come to Ganjam to immerse the ashes of his recently deceased mother, Ambuja, as it is believed that discharging of the ashes in holy rivers rids the deceased of sins and paves way for his or her elevation to heaven.

Accompanied by five relatives, Srikanth reached the Caurvery confluence and was performing puja rituals connected with ashes immersion, when he suddenly slipped and was washed away by the river.

The police and fire personnel who rushed to the spot after getting to know of the incident through the locals scouted for the body by using a boat. But as the draught in the river was strong, the body was found later to have been stuck to the metal net built across the river at Mahadevapura three kilometers away from the confluence. The locals who saw the body alerted the police after which it was retrieved.
