Udupi, Jul 23: The district is facing the problem of artificial flood due to the continuous rains that are lashing since five days.

Water entered the low-lying areas. Houses situated beside the rivulate are inundated. Artificial flood formed in areas around Kalsanka and Ambagilu. The rivulets and storm water drains are overflowing due to the incessant rains, which caused the roads to be waterlogged. Pedestrians and vehicle riders were witnessed having a tough time negotiating the harsh road conditions.

An average of 135 mm rain is recorded in the last 24 hours. Kundapur taluk of the district has received a record amount of 155 mm of rain, while Udupi and Karkal have received 130 mm and 90 mm of rain respectively as per the information given by the meteorological department of Udupi. The district administration has given warning to people living in river basins to be alert. Fishermen are asked not to venture into the sea.

Hepsiba Korlapati, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district has extended the holiday that was declared to primary and high schools earlier to colleges also as the parents of the degree and PUC students exerted pressure on the DC. This was a verbal announcement from the DC to be applied with immediate effect.

Homes built close to large drains and low lying /reclaimed swamp lands will always be inundated .Townplanning should not allow housing close to main drainage or swamp wetlands -these are marked on the town planning survey map.cannot understand why strict action is not taken against civil engineers and architects and officials who pass such projects.poverty is no excuse for accidents.

The situation has been very bad since last couple days due to the heavy rains. Nobody can help as it is nature which has brought the much needed rains. This has happened due to improper drainage which caused floods and entered in to low lying houses and shops. My thanks to Umesh Marpalli and Justin D'Silva of Daijiworld for the photo coverage of the flooded streets and fields in Udupi.
